CD review
WoodyBoye
Appleseed Recordings
I've requested a few different review CDs since our last issue. The Joel Rafael Band's Woodboye: Songs of Woody Guthrie and tales worth telling Volume II (Appleseed Recordings) is a worthy follow-up to their earlier Appleseed release, Woodeye. Guthrie's words and music live on through Rafael and friends' beautiful, authentic, grittily polished acoustic performances. Joel's daughter Jamaica's vocal harmonies and violin are especially evocative additions. Several songs feature Joel's musical settings of Woody's lyrics not previously set to music. Woody's down-to-earth, populist message has never been more relevant or needed than it is today.
