Folk Tunesmith Turns Up On Elite List

Last month, San Diego's Joel Rafael added his name to exclusive group of singer-songwriters that includes Lyle Lovett, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Like his celebrated peers, Rafael is one of the winners of the "New Folk Emerging Songwriter Contest" at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. Rafael was one of two winners asked back to perform at next year's festival. The 1996 Kerrville Festival will mark the festival's 25th anniversary. Rafael's triumph at Kerrville was a testament to his songwriting and performing prowess.
