China Basin Digs
words and music by Joel Rafael & John Trudell

The homeless got the old heave ho
From the China Basin Digs
The cops came down at sunrise
To the shadow of the bridge
And they told us to pack up and move
Three dozen will attest
After confiscating tents
Threatened with arrest

Posting signs on walls and poles
They ran us off to stay
If you show up back down here again
We'll haul your ass away
And run you down like crooks and thieves
And into jail cells keep
Haul us off to jail tonight
At least we'll get some sleep

They tell us to get out of here
But they say not where to go
This milk crate full of odds and ends
Is everything I own
Sure they've got to do their jobs
But why must they be so rude
When our shopping carts are filled
With everything but food

I'm here because I lost my job
And it cut my flow of cash
The cops they roust us everyday
Except when cameras flash
So tonight we'll be your evening news
On television sets
When your busy day begins
So soon you will forget

(John Trudell)
Refugees and poverty wars The home of the brave
The brave have no home
The land of the free
Now free costs money
And some ones say
The land is all owned
Refugees and poverty wars

The homeless got the old heave ho
From the China Basin Digs
The cops came down at sunrise
To the shadow of the bridge
And they told us to pack up and move
Three dozen will attest
After confiscating tents
Threatened with arrest

Told us that we had to leave
Pack your things and go
Tonight we'll be some other place
Where we do not know
The homeless got the old heave ho
